A programme of ‘quality’ day walks designed to support candidates on the Summer Mountain Leader or Walking Group Leader Awards, or those who want to enjoy a good challenging walk .

Are you registered for either the Summer Mountain Leader or Walking Group Leader Awards, but struggling to fullfill the log book requirements?

Would you like to join a group of like minded people, to support you during the time between training and assessment?

Would you like to join others to have a great day out on the hills?

If you can answer yes to any of these, then our programme of Quality Days is for you.  Having worked through the Mountain Leader Award, we know  how difficult it can be to keep up the momentum between training and assessment.  We have planned this programme of monthly day walks to bridge that gap, in a friendly supportive group. Walks will take at least 5 hours and include off path navigation, on a variety of terrain.

Learn how your GPS works, how and when to use it when out walking, planning routes and reviewing them when you get back home.

• Have you recently bought a GPS unit, and are unsure what to do with it?
• Would you like to be able to extend your navigation skills by using GPS?

This one-day course based in the Derbyshire Peak District is ideal for those who have just got a GPS and want to use it when walking in moorland or mountains. You will learn how your GPS works, how and when to use it when out walking, planning routes and reviewing them when you get back home.

By the end of the session you should understand how to get the best from your GPS to add to your traditional navigation skills.  Includes:
•    What is GPS and how does it work
•    What the buttons do and the menus are for…..
•    Finding out where I am and relating it to the map.
•    Creating waypoints and making a route.
•    Making a track of where I am walking.
•    Getting the information about where I have walked.
•    What is geocaching and how do I do it?

During the day you have the chance to try out a range of Garmin GPS devices, Satmap, Viewranger on your mobile and Memory Map software.

A 1 day course, which will set you up with the basics of using a map and compass over easy open moorland.

Are you a regular hill walker, but always follow a book, or have never learned to use a compass? If so, this is the course for you! Learn basic navigation skills whilst enjoying a day long walk in the beautiful Derbyshire Peak District.

Starts with a short overview, followed by a walk through fields and moorland using a map and compass.
Includes:
• maps & scales  • contours relief & height
• using a compass
• taking a bearing from the map & walking on it
• taking a bearing from the ground & relating to map.
• pacing & timing   • finding features on the ground
• moving on steeper ground

Gain confidence using your map and compass skills on difficult open moorland.

The 1 day “improvers” navigation course for people who already know the basics of using a map and compass. The walk will be approx. 10.5 miles involving crossing the centre of Kinder Scout.

Incudes:

• Route planning

• using the compass
• pacing and timing
• moving on steep ground
• re-location strategies
